This is my most recent pareidolia sighting. I have titled it U.S. Male. My Facebook friend will recognize it. I made the photo at her house. As I waited to see if anyone was home, I looked at her mailbox and saw this guy looking back at me!
I decided to transform this rustic piece of Americana into one of my digital art pieces by adding some stars and stripes and a postage stamp border – both effects achieved using Photoshop CC.
“Watching God (Facing Life’s Storms)” is my digital art entry in this exhibition.
My original source of inspiration came from lines in Chapter 18: “The wind came back with triple fury, and put out the light for the last time … They seemed to be staring at the dark, but their eyes were watching God.”
Earlier in Chapter 18, Hurston writes “chink up your cracks” (in the cabin) and (as they face the forces of nature) “Six eyes were questioning God.” Both lines, reinforced my original vision of Janie, Tea Cake and Motor Boat huddling in the darkness of their rustic shanty, staring at the door during the hurricane, with flashes of light through the chinks allowing cracks of lightning to fall across their faces.”
Several River City Art Association members have artwork in the Vigo County Public Library’s 2017 Big Read Art Competition/Exhibit on view through March in the library at Seventh and Poplar streets.
